Food Security and Special Needs: Closing the Gap in Underserved Communities
Families caring for individuals with special needs face unique food security challenges. Here's how Thomas Legacy Foundation is working to close that gap.
Food insecurity affects millions of American families — but for families caring for individuals with special needs, the challenge is compounded in ways that are rarely discussed. Dietary restrictions, sensory sensitivities, feeding therapies, and the sheer time and energy demands of caregiving all create barriers to consistent, nutritious eating that most food assistance programs are not designed to address.
At Thomas Legacy Foundation, food security is not a separate program — it is woven into everything we do. Because we know that a child cannot learn, a senior cannot thrive, and a family cannot move forward when basic nutritional needs are not being met.
The Unique Challenges Families Face
Many individuals with autism, sensory processing disorders, or other developmental disabilities have highly specific dietary needs. They may only accept a narrow range of foods, require particular textures or preparations, or need specialized nutritional supplements. Standard food bank offerings — while invaluable — often don't meet these needs. Families may receive food they cannot use, while the specific items their loved one requires remain out of reach.
Caregivers also face a time poverty that makes meal preparation difficult. When you are managing therapies, school meetings, medical appointments, and the daily demands of caregiving, cooking nutritious meals from scratch can feel impossible. The result is often reliance on convenience foods that are less nutritious and more expensive per calorie.
What We Are Doing
Thomas Legacy Foundation's food security initiatives focus on meeting families where they are. We work to connect families with food assistance programs they may not know they qualify for — including SNAP, WIC, and school meal programs. We partner with local food banks and pantries to advocate for more diverse, culturally responsive, and dietary-need-aware offerings. And we provide direct food assistance to families in our network who are facing acute need.
We also recognize that food security is inseparable from economic security. Our skill development and employment programs help caregivers build financial stability — because the best long-term solution to food insecurity is a living wage.
How You Can Help
Donate to Thomas Legacy Foundation's food security fund. Volunteer at a local food bank and advocate for more inclusive offerings. If you work in food service, nutrition, or agriculture, consider partnering with us. And if you know a family that is struggling, help them connect with the resources available to them — sometimes the biggest barrier is simply not knowing where to start.
